I've been wanting for a while to collect the different versions we see of the Wizard's Oath. The January challenge prompted me to actually do it. I didn't totally finish what I wanted to do with it, but I figure I have enough to make a post.

Currently this contains complete or reasonably complete versions of the Wizard's Oath that appear in all the Young Wizards setting books that are available as ebooks. So, books 1-9 are covered in the New Millenium editions, not the original editions (ideally I'd like to check the original editions for any variations, but I haven't done that yet), and I haven't yet looked at Games Wizards Play. In some cases, the Oath appears in chunks with other text around it - in those cases I've included the surrounding text as well. Citations are by story title and chapter title.

I would appreciate comments of any additions or corrections.

For the Wizard's Oath challenge, I made a graphic. It's fairly large, even in thumbnail form, so if you want to see the full size, just click on it.

So, admittedly a little late for the holidays, but the CrossingsCon PR team put together a playlist of the songs from How Lovely Are Thy Branches, and I've been meaning to post it over here for you for a...couple weeks now. Whoops. Original post quoted below. I hope you can still get some joy from it even though it's after the new year!

Dai cousins! As people start getting ready for their own holiday parties, why add a little Young Wizards to yours?

We compiled a playlist of all the songs we could find mentioned in How Lovely Are Thy Branches which you can find here. Whether it brings good cheer to your party, or sparks your own debate over the original lyrics of O Tannenbaum, we hope you enjoy it.

Have a happy holidays!

Dai Stihò! I promised you all that I'd post an info post for CrossingsCon, but it's taken longer than I thought. Thanks for your patience!

CrossingsCon is, first and foremost, this universe's only convention founded on Diane Duane’s Young Wizards. Year Three is taking place June 21-23, 2019 in Montréal, Québec, Canada. You can buy a badge here!

More specifically, CrossingsCon is a moment out of time, where people can come together to share their Art and have fun doing it. It's a place where, just for a weekend, the wizardry that is usually just around the corner is instead right in front of you. Inspired by the Young Wizards series and other stories, we celebrate the power of storytelling to literally change our lives and the world around us. The Crossings is a huge melting pot of cultures, people, and ideas, and we strive to emulate it to the extent we can (although as yet we are limited to planet Earth). We look forward to greeting cousins we know and welcoming cousins we haven't met yet, because in hearing their stories, we become family.

More info and useful links )

I'll post more information over the next couple weeks and as I have new information to share with you! Feel free to comment if there's a specific question you wanted me to address. I hope to see you this summer!

Happy New Year and welcome to our inaugural monthly challenge!

The challenge rules are loose: I'll post a challenge on the first of the month (the second if the first falls on a Saturday) and if it inspires you, you can create a fanwork for it. ALL types of fanworks are welcome: fic, moodboard, fanart, podfic, whatever. If you think it's fanwork, it counts.

Challenge: Wizard's Oath

As both the start of a new year and a revitalized community, it seems apt to start off with something focusing on what makes a wizard a wizard: the Wizard's Oath. It's the beginning of the series, of adventures, of a way to look at life and know you can help.

Write your own version. Write a fic focusing on the Oath. Record yourself speaking the Oath. Illustrate the Oath. Whatever you want to create, create it!

I've been reading some of Diane Duane's Star Trek books. I'm currently reading Doctor's Orders (1990). There are occasional points of contact between her Star Trek books and the Young Wizards books (for example, the Sulamids appear in both.)

There's a shark mentioned in passing in Doctor's Orders whose description sounds a lot like Ed.

A couple of years ago, I posted on Tumblr three images with the opening lines from the Young Wizards series, including the Interim Errantry stories, the two short stories, and the Cats of Grand Central books. The Interim Errantry: Ordeals ebook was not yet written, so the first lines from there not included here. Due to Tumblr's shenanigans, I've crossposted them here.

The images are in the public domain. I can't remember where the first one is, but the second is Ireland and the third is Grand Central. Click on the images to load them full size.

It's been 80 million years since I last wrote YW fic, but I'm excited about the comm and moving to dreamwidth, and I wanted to give you guys something, so here's my gift for Indy from the 2013 Christmas in July Exchange. Maybe with the active comm I might put together something new.

We're good to go, everyone!

Welcome to the revamped YoungWizards_dw community! Please read the sticky post for the community rules and a place to introduce yourselves in the comments.

Go tell everyone you think would be interested in this community!

A couple of housekeeping things:

1. There should be comments on the imported posts, but they're hung up in the import queue. They'll show up when they show up.

2. Within the next week, I'll add character tags.

Dai stihó!

Dai stihó, cousins!

Welcome to the YoungWizards community on Dreamwidth. This is both an import of the old Young Wizards community on LiveJournal and hopefully a revitalization of it.

The history of this place can be summed up fairly easily: the only discussion space in the 2000s for Young Wizards fans that wasn’t the official forum. It also had pretty much all types fanworks (fanmixes, icons, etc.) but fanfics were generally posted on Myraid_Words, a fic-centric community. I cannot guarantee that any links or images in the imported posts still work.

Fandom now seems to mostly exist on the Slack channel (which is a lovely place to go and has subchannels for a whole bunch of non-YW things), on AO3 for fic, and then Tumblr for a mix of everything (though the latter has, with the advent of the Slack channel a couple of years ago, quieted down immensely).

I’d like to see this community become is a mix of things: discussion, posting of fanworks, etc. All types of fanwork are welcome-- art, fic, meta, craft, fanmix, etc. Crosspost your fanart from Tumblr! Post your speculation for future books! Give us meta or prompts or whatever your heart desires.

I plan on hosting a monthly challenge to encourage people to participate here. You do not have to wait for the challenges to post fanworks; they’re welcome at any time.

There’s only a handful of rules:

Now for the enjoyable part: let’s introduce ourselves in the comments so we can get to know each other a little better. Possible things you may want to include: your usernames elsewhere, links to your fanworks, how active you are on Dreamwidth, other fandoms, etc.

Just a head's up: I'm revamping some stuff here (tags, making an intro post, profile, etc.) so things will be changing and moving around. If you give me a few days, the comm will be much more organized and ready for business.

Edit Dec. 6, 2018: I added the tags we need in public here because otherwise they'd clutter up another post unnecessarily. May as well put them here.

I know this community is pretty much abandoned, but just in case, I thought I'd pop in and post about this before it's too late.

CrossingsCon 2016 is a fan-run Young Wizards convention happening June 24-26 in Newark, New Jersey. The first two days of the con are panels and such at the hotel. June 26 is an optional tour of YW-related places in Manhattan.

Badges cost $50 dollars. The badges with the tour are available until May 22; the ones without are available until June 15.

There is a hotel block with room discounts available.

I am not a member of the concom (I'm just a very excited attendee), so please direct any questions to the concom either via their Tumblr Ask box or their email thecrossingscon@gmail.com.

So, is anyone planning on seeing/has anyone seen the new movie based on the Edgar Rice Burroughs Mars books?

Much like Kit's doodles, Dejah Thoris will be actually wearing clothing. Though at the actress's request, the clothing will be a bit briefer than the original design.

My son has already expressed an interest in it, so we'll be going to see it together. Looks like during the day on Monday or Tuesday will be a good time to see it.

http://mashable.com/2012/03/07/solar-storm/

I thought some folks around here might think this was interesting/cool/relevant!  The sun just spit out apparently a pretty huge CME, which it also did... recently, about a month ago I think?  I was all excited because the little tool on my Google homepage said "STORM!" instead of "normal" with regards to solar activity.

You just remember to behave yourself within reason, Sol, and we'll all be happy!

Off the top of anyone's head, do we get a description of Nita any earlier than that scene in Wizards at War where she's looking in the mirror at a pimple?

I'm trying to do a series of first-appearance quotes for the YW fan tumblr I run, and I can get a bunch of good ones for other people - Kit and Dairine both get several good ones in the first three books, I'm having trouble picking one each - but man, I can't get hold of anything for Nita. (While I'm at it: which is your favourite Lone Power? I am super-partial to Alone!LP in his suit, scarf, and big black sword.)

Does Dairine's planet, the home of Gigo, Logo, etc., have a name? I'm having no luck finding it anywhere, if it does.

If it doesn't have a name, what do the fans generally call it?

Can anyone remember in which book Tom or Carl says something along the lines of, "After all, most people think it's normal to have a nameless sorrow at the bottom of your heart"? I feel like it's Dilemma but I don't see it on a flickthrough.

the reason why I want to know is spoilery for New Who through season 5 )
