steorra: Illumination of the Latin words In Principio erat verbum (books)

I've been wanting for a while to collect the different versions we see of the Wizard's Oath. The January challenge prompted me to actually do it. I didn't totally finish what I wanted to do with it, but I figure I have enough to make a post.

Currently this contains complete or reasonably complete versions of the Wizard's Oath that appear in all the Young Wizards setting books that are available as ebooks. So, books 1-9 are covered in the New Millenium editions, not the original editions (ideally I'd like to check the original editions for any variations, but I haven't done that yet), and I haven't yet looked at Games Wizards Play. In some cases, the Oath appears in chunks with other text around it - in those cases I've included the surrounding text as well. Citations are by story title and chapter title.

I would appreciate comments of any additions or corrections.

I was just curious how many out there had memorized The Oath. I took it myself when I read So You Want to be a Wizard, and decided it was a pretty good thing to keep in mind when living life from day to day. Well anyways a week or so ago I took the time to commit it to memory and was wondering if anyone else had as well.

new member, have loved these books for years. due to the restrictions of my public library, my personal funds, etc, i've only read the first four books. hopefully someday soon i'll be able to immerse myself in the others!

big dumb question... diane duane has never given us the symbols for the speech, has she? i don't think so, but i figured i might as well ask and be disappointed. *sigh*

second dumb question... why do i seem to think i'm finding two different versions of the wizard's oath? the first is like this...

ends in universe's end... )

in the other version, the 'until Universe's end" is replaced with...

this... )

Does anyone have an MP3 of the Wizards Oath? I think something like that would be nice to carry around on a cell phone as inspiration.

It'd also be cool to have the daily mantra (The one that begins "I will meet the cruel and the cowardly today...") that showed up in in the Feline Wizardry series.
