Like with the last two weeks, I'm doing a discussion post!

Cousins, what sorts of characters do you most like seeing explored in Young Wizards fanworks?

(I have a particular fondness for sentient technology/vehicles, but much of the variation featured in the series delights me. There's lots of conversational potential - and that includes 'in conversation with the original text'!)

As a continuation of the last week's post, I've been working on a crossover concept for Young Wizards and my latest obsession, Kamen Rider Gotchard.

What's been on your minds lately, Cousins? Where have you been bringing things together that, to most people, would seem entirely separate?

(Only if you are comfortable sharing, of course. ^^; And just commenting on the triple drabble is fine, too.)

Dai, everyone! In light of [community profile] 3weeks4dreamwidth's event, I'm sliding in here with a fanworks question for you all:

Promo Blurb for the event, for those interested

What's one Young Wizards crossover that brings you joy?

It can be a straightforwards 'characters meeting' deal, a fusion of two (or more!) different worlds, or simply thematic resonance.

I know a look at my AO3 list of YW works gives a good view on what crossovers I've liked in the past plus my ongoing effort to invoke thematic crossovers with every DW RP game I've joined, not that that's particularly of interest to most people in this comm, but not all fun crossovers are embodied in fic!

So, Cousins, what crossovers have you enjoyed?

[If anyone is interested in making more posts because of the event, I'd be glad to see more posts! But even without that, I'll try and post here at least once per week for these three weeks.]

So, is anyone planning on seeing/has anyone seen the new movie based on the Edgar Rice Burroughs Mars books?

Much like Kit's doodles, Dejah Thoris will be actually wearing clothing. Though at the actress's request, the clothing will be a bit briefer than the original design.

My son has already expressed an interest in it, so we'll be going to see it together. Looks like during the day on Monday or Tuesday will be a good time to see it.

http://mashable.com/2012/03/07/solar-storm/

I thought some folks around here might think this was interesting/cool/relevant!  The sun just spit out apparently a pretty huge CME, which it also did... recently, about a month ago I think?  I was all excited because the little tool on my Google homepage said "STORM!" instead of "normal" with regards to solar activity.

You just remember to behave yourself within reason, Sol, and we'll all be happy!

Moderators, please feel free to delete this but...

Does anyone know where I can find a hardback copy of Deep Wizardry?  (Not library-bound but hardback... hardback has a jacket, library-bound is just a book in hard form)

I swear I've looked all over the place!  I've tried Barnes and Noble, Amazon, and Rare Books!

It's the only one missing in my collection.  If you have any suggestions I'd greatly appreciate it.

Oh, and it has to be under $40.  I'm afraid I'm on a limited budget as most out-of-schoolers tend to be.

Thanks so much!

EDIT:  I also have a very very rare hardback copy (but not what I'm looking for) so if anyone is looking for collecting really really old (but in great shape) Diane Duane hardback, I have one!

I've pretty much got Harry Potter on the brain 24/7, and then lately, I've been going through a few of the YW books in preparation for getting A Wizard of Mars this Friday for my birthday. *bounces* Both fandoms got jumbled in my head and I kept seeing similarities and the interesting differences in the ways the two authors handled different concepts and themes, and eventually, I had to put it all down in a word doc to exorcise it from my brain, lol, so I could function instead of endlessly pondering YW vs HP. Because fun as it is, so distracting!

I don't pretend to be objective in any way, this post is pretty much how I think Diane Duane rocks in so many ways that JKR fails to measure up to, and all the things I love about YW and how it's also dealt with in HP. My HP f-listers disagree with pretty much everything I wrote, lol, I'm curious to see if you guys would agree.

If you're interested in a discussion, take a look here at my journal.

I just got back from my first ever visit to Ireland. While I was there, I spent the better part of a day walking from Bray to Greystones along the ocean, climbing Bray Head, and waiting for an Irish goth boy with a suspiciously glowing ballpoint pen to show up.

This poem published at Strange Horizons reminded me a little of Carmela's intergalactic chatrooms.

So I'm finally making it to Ireland in the end of February, and am as unbelievably excited as you might imagine. A Wizard Abroad might not be my favorite YW book but it's Diane Duane and therefore ten times better than most other written material. I was wondering if any other YW fans have visited Ireland and seen any of the locations in the book. I'm not going to be there very long (three nights in Dublin, two nights in Galway) but while in Dublin I was hoping to take some kind of day-trip out toward County Wicklow, and I figured this might be a good place for suggestions? Thanks in advance!

I was given mod permission to pimp a comm called [livejournal.com profile] comment_fic. I've been leaving some Young Wizard Series prompts and thought it'd be nice having more of us over there.

It's lucky I'm still in New York City tonight, or I might have missed this Young Wizards-related news story.

Cut for Deep Wizardry spoilers, I suppose? )

Superman has a facility with language. He speaks all human languages fluently, and writes for a living.

He also has proven, at least once, that he is willing to die in the line of duty.

Magic is also one of his weaknesses.

So, if he had been offered the Oath as a (pre-)teenager, and had taken it, could he kick his own butt?

And would he be able to convince kryptonite not to hurt him?

And I still need a YW icon.

Here’s a story I thought you guys might appreciate.

A friend of my mom’s bought a tote bag at a charity auction, only to discover there were books inside (they hadn’t been listed with the bag). She didn’t have any interest in them, so offered them to mom knowing I’ll read almost anything. One of the books (Gregory Maguire’s Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister) came pretty badly damaged. As in, it looked like somebody broke the spine trying to make the top touch the bottom.

And my first thought, after what the hell happened to this poor thing was you know, if I knew Speech I could fix this right up. And I spent a few seconds figuring out exactly what would need to be fixed before I caught myself with a wistful sigh.

This probably just shows how eagerly I await the next book.

So, today I have a bit of an inspirational story in regards to the Young Wizards series.

I'm in a biology class at my community college, and there's people of all different ages there. I've started talking to this one woman who's very friendly towards me, and she has... two kids, I think. One of the kids is a boy, and he doesn't like to read. He had to do a book report, and he picked out this massive Star Wars book that was way too many pages for him, and his mother had to force him to read it.

Now, I was chatting with this woman, and she told me the sort of stuff he does like to read (in terms of manga and stuff like that). And I thought about it for a moment, and then I recommended the Young Wizards books.

This was last week.

They picked up the first three books in the series, and apparently he's now about 3/4ths of the way through the first book and won't stop reading them.

This makes me incredibly happy. ♥

It was nice seeing everyone that dropped by, even for a few minutes. Hunt's luck!

This is my first post here although I've been lurking for eons (as I do with most communities) but I just had to post about this awesome article about a dolphin that lead some beached whales back to sea. (It's short! Go, read it!) And I immediately thought -- omg, dolphin wizard going about saving the day, of course! But of course I'm still curious as to why the whales were so distressed and beaching in the first place. ...
