Dai stihó, cousins!
Welcome to the YoungWizards community on Dreamwidth. This is both an import of the old Young Wizards community on LiveJournal and hopefully a revitalization of it.
The history of this place can be summed up fairly easily: the only discussion space in the 2000s for Young Wizards fans that wasn’t the official forum. It also had pretty much all types fanworks (fanmixes, icons, etc.) but fanfics were generally posted on Myraid_Words, a fic-centric community. I cannot guarantee that any links or images in the imported posts still work.
Fandom now seems to mostly exist on the Slack channel (which is a lovely place to go and has subchannels for a whole bunch of non-YW things), on AO3 for fic, and then Tumblr for a mix of everything (though the latter has, with the advent of the Slack channel a couple of years ago, quieted down immensely).
I’d like to see this community become is a mix of things: discussion, posting of fanworks, etc. All types of fanwork are welcome-- art, fic, meta, craft, fanmix, etc. Crosspost your fanart from Tumblr! Post your speculation for future books! Give us meta or prompts or whatever your heart desires.
I plan on hosting a monthly challenge to encourage people to participate here. You do not have to wait for the challenges to post fanworks; they’re welcome at any time.
There’s only a handful of rules:
Now for the enjoyable part: let’s introduce ourselves in the comments so we can get to know each other a little better. Possible things you may want to include: your usernames elsewhere, links to your fanworks, how active you are on Dreamwidth, other fandoms, etc.
One more week, one more post!
May. 11th, 2024 12:58 pmLike with the last two weeks, I'm doing a discussion post!
Cousins, what sorts of characters do you most like seeing explored in Young Wizards fanworks?
(I have a particular fondness for sentient technology/vehicles, but much of the variation featured in the series delights me. There's lots of conversational potential - and that includes 'in conversation with the original text'!)

As a continuation of the last week's post, I've been working on a crossover concept for Young Wizards and my latest obsession, Kamen Rider Gotchard.
What's been on your minds lately, Cousins? Where have you been bringing things together that, to most people, would seem entirely separate?
(Only if you are comfortable sharing, of course. ^^; And just commenting on the triple drabble is fine, too.)

Dai, everyone! In light of
3weeks4dreamwidth's event, I'm sliding in here with a fanworks question for you all:

3weeks4dreamwidth is celebrating Dreamwidth's anniversary!
Come join in for fun, memes, activities, and more ♥
What's one Young Wizards crossover that brings you joy?
It can be a straightforwards 'characters meeting' deal, a fusion of two (or more!) different worlds, or simply thematic resonance.
I know a look at my AO3 list of YW works gives a good view on what crossovers I've liked in the pastplus my ongoing effort to invoke thematic crossovers with every DW RP game I've joined, not that that's particularly of interest to most people in this comm, but not all fun crossovers are embodied in fic!
So, Cousins, what crossovers have you enjoyed?
[If anyone is interested in making more posts because of the event, I'd be glad to see more posts! But even without that, I'll try and post here at least once per week for these three weeks.]
Promo Blurb for the event, for those interested

There Beneath by The Oh Hellos
Jul. 20th, 2020 01:04 pmThe lyrics of this song remind me a lot of the scene where Nita first experiences wizardry by being able to hear the trees. They also tie into the experience of Timeheart.
Lyrics:
There beneath the willow tree
I learned a lot about the way of things
I learned that everything (the wind, the leaves) has breath inside
They were pointing ever east
To see the ever-turning aeon cease
Their wills were ever bent on waiting with all their might
I know (I know)
I know this
There is beauty in the way of things
There beyond the palisade
I saw the morning lead a cavalcade
They made a marvel of a display
And it made me cry 'o lai'
O lai (o lai)
O lai lord
There is beauty in the way of things

I just came across the Wikipedia article about perytons, which introduces them like this:
This was a surprise, because the only perytons I'd read about before (well, aside from the radio astronomy kind) were the ones in So You Want to Be a Wizard, which seem totally different. I wonder if Diane Duane's are related to any others, or if they're completely her own thing.
( Here's what we know about them )
Corrections, additions, differing interpretations, comments, context - all welcome.
The peryton is a mythological hybrid animal combining the physical features of a stag and a bird. The peryton was created and described by Jorge Luis Borges in his 1957 Book of Imaginary Beings, using a supposedly long-lost medieval manuscript as a source.

In honor of the third CrossingsCon happening later this month, our challenge this month is: the Crossings. It can be either the canon Crossings or something from CrossingsCon itself (pictures, trip reports from past cons, etc.).

My favorite quote
Mar. 25th, 2019 08:22 amMy favorite quote-- and I have a lot of them from the YW series-- is this one from A Wizard Alone:
"Footsteps in the snow suggest where you have been, point where you were going: but where they suddenly vanish, never dismiss the possibility of flight…"
Simply put, it's one of the most hopeful lines I've ever read, with a touch of fantasy. And that's why I love it.

Side-stepping the obvious choices (I have Nita's version of the Oath pinned on this journal, and for good reason - apart from being a good reminder for myself in general, it's also a shorthand canon review), I'd like to highlight one of my favorite character descriptions from DD's Middle Kingdoms/Tale of the Five series:
[Sunspark was a oneness. Not a tangle of warring motivations, not divided against itself…but one. A single, driving, driven force, an eternal constant, a being, an IS!
And a tightly encapsulated one it had been, wound around and through itself, dwelling within itself completely, needing none other. Of course its kind had no need for love or companionship in any form. They were themselves, gloriously self-contained, solitary as stars. When they finally grew tired of themselves—to that extent the great Death could affect them—they found another in the same state and conjoined, united in an ecstasy of renewal, were lost in it forever and both reborn as new identities, a blend of parts of the two that formed them.
But Sunspark—
Sunspark had become unique.
Sunspark was changing. Daring to change. Trying to change.]
The essence of relationships is change; for the other person as well as yourself. I'm- truth be told I'm reminded more than a little of my own development, in regards to participating in fandom. Before high school, fandom was something I observed but didn't think I could - was allowed to contribute to. The Young Wizards fandom played a huge part in that changing for me, not just providing opportunities and open askboxes, but encouraging me to make my own changes, that my own ideas were valid and worth sharing.
And that means a lot to me.
