Not that age is irrelevant. I think it's pretty clear that none of these characters are very mature right now, and it makes complete sense for any complicated relationships to develop later in their lives. I mean, maybe teens are more mature now than they were when I was that age, but trying to picture my schoomates making polyamory work... T.T
Who said polyamory, maybe they just get drunk and have sex! I managed that with a couple of friends in high school and it didn't go anywhere too horrifying. :P
But indeed. Mind you I don't know that early twenties will do it either.
To follow up a little, I guess my headcanon for Nita/Kit is that because they get together so young they go through a period of angst at around 18/19 where they're like "we're too vanilla! and I'm keeping you from having exciting and awful early sexual experiences!" and to resolve it instead of breaking up like dummies they decide to start having sex (together) with other people. Not like, ALL the time, but pretty often. Sometimes people who don't know them very well tease them about being so cute and together since high school and they're just like "... uh-huh :P".
And then they have sex with Ronan and that could go ... lots of ways. In fact I'm about to do a post about three of the ways that are in my WIP folder. sigh.
That seems pretty reasonable, actually. I tend to start from where I think stuff would/should happen and then add a few years because Nita and Kit seem relatively conservative.
As in, surprisingly conservative, as in, "Kit are you seriously disturbed by the porn on your TV screen, you're a thirteen-year-old boy, aren't you supposed to be eating this shit up."
