Dai stihó!
Dec. 6th, 2018 02:53 pmDai stihó, cousins!
Welcome to the YoungWizards community on Dreamwidth. This is both an import of the old Young Wizards community on LiveJournal and hopefully a revitalization of it.
The history of this place can be summed up fairly easily: the only discussion space in the 2000s for Young Wizards fans that wasn’t the official forum. It also had pretty much all types fanworks (fanmixes, icons, etc.) but fanfics were generally posted on Myraid_Words, a fic-centric community. I cannot guarantee that any links or images in the imported posts still work.
Fandom now seems to mostly exist on the Slack channel (which is a lovely place to go and has subchannels for a whole bunch of non-YW things), on AO3 for fic, and then Tumblr for a mix of everything (though the latter has, with the advent of the Slack channel a couple of years ago, quieted down immensely).
I’d like to see this community become is a mix of things: discussion, posting of fanworks, etc. All types of fanwork are welcome-- art, fic, meta, craft, fanmix, etc. Crosspost your fanart from Tumblr! Post your speculation for future books! Give us meta or prompts or whatever your heart desires.
I plan on hosting a monthly challenge to encourage people to participate here. You do not have to wait for the challenges to post fanworks; they’re welcome at any time.
There’s only a handful of rules:
1. Remember the Wizard’s Oath. Treat people how you want to be treated. If you have a problem with a post or someone’s behavior, contact me. Don’t start fights in the comments.
2. This community operates under “don’t like, don’t read.” All fanworks must be under a cut so people can choose whether or not to view them. If you need to warn for something, please do so before the cut.
Note that fanworks from the import are exempt from this rule because they can’t be edited. If a post is dated 2016 or earlier, cuts and warnings may or may not exist.
3. Mature or Adult-rated fanworks are allowed here. You must use the Adult Content/18+ age restriction to mark them. Per Diane Duane’s request, all characters involved in sexually explicit fanworks must be 18 or older (yes, this means you can age up the characters as long as you state you have).
4. We use tags in this community for organizational purposes. They should be self-explanatory, but if not, please ask.* You can add your own tags if you need them. A complete tag list can be found here or on the sidebar.
* The only one I can think of that might be confusing at first glance is “fandom adjacent,” which means things that are related to material in the books, but are not about canon itself. For example, space weather.
5. Have fun!
Now for the enjoyable part: let’s introduce ourselves in the comments so we can get to know each other a little better. Possible things you may want to include: your usernames elsewhere, links to your fanworks, how active you are on Dreamwidth, other fandoms, etc.

Date: 2018-12-06 09:05 pm (UTC)My Young Wizards fanfic can be found on AO3.
I've been around in this fandom for a while; I don't know how long. My primary fandom is Tolkien, specifically the Silmarillion. I'm fairly active on Dreamwidth, though most of my posts are locked because they deal with offline life. I'm trying to have my fandom posts unlocked.

Date: 2018-12-06 10:18 pm (UTC)I've been in and out of the fandom since around '03 or '04 and fully joined in the run up to the first CrossingsCon. Now you'll be lucky to get rid of me.
I'm trying to be more active on Dreamwidth. We shall see if I succeed.

Date: 2018-12-07 07:27 am (UTC)I've been in the fandom since about 2012, although i read the books in middle school. I've written some for Young Wizards, and you can find it here, but I am a multifandom writer and right now the writer brain is three fandoms to the left, mostly working on haikyuu and gw2 stuff.
I'm also co-chair of CrossingsCon, and I look forward to seeing you all in Montreal this summer!
Nice to meet you!

Date: 2018-12-07 01:05 pm (UTC)CrossingsCon!!! :D Do you want to make a post about it? I'm not sure how big the overlap here is with the usual spaces, so I'm operating under the assumption some people won't know about the con.

Date: 2018-12-07 06:20 pm (UTC)As for CrossingsCon, I'll absolutely make a post about it! Probably more than one, actually, because I don't think anyone from our PR team is on here, haha.

Date: 2018-12-07 06:53 pm (UTC)Thanks! I would have done it myself, but now that a member of the concom is here, I'd rather it be you. (I could see myself having to say, "I don't know; ask the staff.") :D

Date: 2018-12-08 03:23 am (UTC)I never really looked for YW communities after I'd first moved over from LJ but am also lurking as
I may not have been making much recently, (and I've been spoiled by Tumblr's image hosting system) but it will be cool to see where things go from here.

Date: 2018-12-08 03:59 am (UTC)I'm a longtime Dreamwidther, relatively new Young Wizards fan. I read the first book a few years ago and really liked it, but didn't read the whole series until this year, and when I finished I promptly reread the series in the revised version, read all the rest of the Young Wizards-related stories (I think I caught them all), and proceeded on to non-Young Wizards Diane Duane (which I also enjoy, but not as much).
I work in a bookstore, and I got a colleague to fall in love with the series too, and between the two of us we've sold several dozen copies of So You Want To Be A Wizard :-)
Despite my long Dreamwidth residence, this is my first time in any sort of fandom community (on DW or elsewhere), so I'll have to see if it works for me. I haven't really connected with fanfic of any sort so far.

Date: 2018-12-08 07:35 am (UTC)To counterbalance that, I'm going to go trawl for fan art of YW characters and such.

Date: 2018-12-08 11:37 pm (UTC)That's wonderful you've read all of that this year.
It's my not-so-secret mission to get everyone I know to read them. I even have a second copy of SYWTBAW just to loan out to people. So good on you and your colleague!
This isn't just a fanfic community, so I hope you find some way to enjoy fandom. Even just loving it and talking about it counts in my book.
