recent spam

Just to let everyone know that I recently deleted a post that I categorised both as spam and offensive - offensive is subjective, spam is not, as the user in question had recently joined dozens if not hundreds of fannish communities and posted same there. Since there was a general feeling in the comments of said post that the entry should be deleted, and since I waited what I feel was a reasonable length of time to give the user in question the chance to defend the post (for the record, sie refused to engage on this or any other issue) after consulting with conuly I decided immediate deletion was appropriate.

This comm is not a democracy; however, I welcome discussion about this, as ideally it is a benevolent dictatorship rather than a tyranny. The user in question is not blocked, and YW-related promotion is still broadly permissable; comm rule broken was spamming.

I missed this; was it a post about some sort of Fan-Wiki? I'm guessing, because I've seen a myriad of posts on various communities that have to do with Fan-Wikis.

Yes, it was related to a fan wiki. It happened to be one whose goals and purposes I dislike, but that, I hope, is coincidental to the fact that the post was spam.

I've modded other types of lists and discussion groups and have always had a hard-line attitude towards spam. None of the regular, legit users has ever complained to me about it, and several have thanked me. In this case, with me just being a member of the rank and file, I'm very happy to see someone else modding the same way. :D Thank you! ;)

:) Well, it's my pleasure. I felt a little uncomfortable about it because I am usually pretty relaxed about promotion in this community - we don't have enough traffic for it to be a big concern - and I wondered whether I objected to it strictly because it was promoting a cause I dislike. However, it was spam, so I'm off the hook for having to be *that* kind of dictator ;) Thanks for your support!
