Do we ever find out how Nita manages to keep the manual checked out from the library so long? I have to confess that when she first checked it out, I thought she was only going to need it for a two-week period, but I'm up to Book 6 by now*, and she still has it.

*I have to admit that I skipped Book 5 for personal reasons. My hubby will probably read it, though, when he gets to it. He's still in the middle of Book 3 at the moment.

I always thought the manual wasn't actually a library book.

no, she never officially checks it out--she forgot her card and the librarian trusts her on it. I kinda figure the librarian forgets all about the book Nita took home with her or something, with a little help from magic.

Plus when the book was written nothing would have been computerised. Even if she HAD checked the book out it would have been with the old school stamp card things which are easy enough to misplace the record for.

And I figure that Nita forgets that it was supposed to have been a library book, with a little help from the book.

Librarians see a lot of books. So it's reasonable that she could have forgotten about the book. And I always assumed that the manual really wasn't a library book, and was just hiding as one, so it never was on any records. Of course, the reason Nita forgets her card at all is magic!

I think the manual was waiting in disguise as a library book. So it protects itself & lets itself stay with her. Kit says he found his in an antique store, if I remember correctly, & the guy who rang him up didn't comment or say it looked strange or anything.

I always liked to think that maybe the librarian had a special understanding about the manual-- like, she was a wizard herself or she knew about wizards and just kept the whole thing quiet. But it was probably just the magic of the manual.

funny, that. I was wondering exactly the same thing when I first read So You Want to Be a Wizard, when I was about 12 ^^' Now I'm sure Nita's concocted some sort of wizardry to keep her library sign outs in check. Or perhaps the Manual was there waiting specifically FOR HER, and after she found it, it disappeared of the library records altogether.

I think that's it's cover actually. So if Nita ever gave up her wizardry she would just turn the book back in, but she does remember it's a library book. It still has it's label and what not on it. I believe this was answered once before by the fact that the librarian saw the book for what it was and that's why she let Nita check it out without making a record of it.

Thank you! I have wondered about this too. Reading the above comments has provided a few ideas I have always wanted to know . . .
