My copy of Wizard's Holiday finally arrived from the US last week (I read it in a day and then left it on the couch and then MY MOTHER USED IT TO LEAN A SUDOKU PUZZLE ON, SO NOW IT HAS NUMBERS EMBOSSED INTO THE COVER >_>, but that's irrelevant), which made me squee. (Wizards at War is on order and will arrive when it comes out in paperback.) It also made me, well, say stupid things. >_>
I was in a lecture the other day with a boy I, well, kind of like, and as usual we were casually bantering with each other before class started. We managed to start comparing him to a tree - "Well, you do emit oxygen"; "I'm not sure about a love of nitrogen" and the like - and, thinking of Filif, I asked "Well, do you like to root?"
A stunned silence followed before I realised what I'd just asked and my friend slowly said, "No, actually, I do not like to root".
I think (or at least I'd rather like to think) I managed to explain my thought processes there to him, but it was definitely very embarrassing. XD;
edit: I didn't realise that the meaning might be lost in 'translation', as it were. In Australian slang, at least, 'to root' is 'to have sex'. XD
